I want to hire SEO services in Portugal: where do I start?

Short answer

Start by knowing what you already have: whether Google knows your site, which pages appear and for which searches (it is all in Search Console, free). Then ask each agency for a written plan with the pages it will create or improve, how it will measure results and the monthly cost. Be wary of anyone promising first place.

SEO is the work of making your website appear in searches without paying per click. For a small local business in Portugal it almost always starts with the Google Business Profile and with pages that answer what people search for: the service and the town, in Portuguese.

Before hiring, ask for access to your site's Google Search Console, or set it up. It shows how many people saw your site on Google, how many clicked and for which searches. It is the basis for comparing proposals and for knowing, three months later, whether the work paid off.

A good proposal says which pages it will create or improve, how it will measure (clicks and enquiries, not only rankings) and what it delivers each month. The accounts should be in your company's name. Nobody controls Google: anyone promising first place is selling something they cannot guarantee.

Results usually take a few months to show. In the case studies we publish, we always show Search Console figures with their period.

What you should receive

  • 01

    A diagnosis with data

What Search Console shows today: pages, searches, clicks and technical issues.

  • 02

    A written plan

Which pages will be created or improved, for which searches and in what order.

  • 03

    A monthly report

Clicks, searches and enquiries from Google, compared with the previous period.

  • 04

    Accounts in your name

Search Console, Analytics and the Google profile belong to your company, not the agency.

Questions to ask before signing

  • Who does the work, and is it subcontracted?
  • Which pages will be created or improved in the first quarter?
  • How is success measured: clicks and enquiries, not just rankings?
  • Will the accounts be in my company's name?
  • Is there a minimum term, and how do I leave?
  • Can you show other clients' results with figures and sources?

Frequently asked questions

How long does SEO take to show results?

Usually a few months, depending on the competition and the starting point. The Google Business Profile tends to react faster than the website.

How much does SEO cost in Portugal?

Prices vary widely. At HLM, SEO Essencial costs €20/month + VAT and SEO Growth €100/month + VAT, with prices published on our website.

SEO or Google Ads?

Google Ads brings enquiries now and is paid per click. SEO takes longer but is not paid per click. For most small businesses, it makes sense to start with the Google profile and use ads while SEO grows.

Can I do SEO myself?

You can start: a complete Google profile, reviews and one page per service with its own text. An agency helps when time is short or when the technical side holds everything else back.
