Quote requests: is WhatsApp or a contact form better?

Short answer

WhatsApp, for most construction and home-service businesses in Portugal. In our 2026 data, 117 of 135 requests (87%) were clicks on the website's WhatsApp button. A form is still useful for people who prefer to write calmly, but it should be the second option, not the only one.

People asking for a quote for building work want to send a photo and get a reply the same day, almost always from a phone. WhatsApp does both in one tap. A form makes them type, wait and trust that the message arrived. In Portugal, WhatsApp is also how most people already talk to tradespeople.

The figures from our sample of 8 Google Ads accounts (24 July–21 October 2026): 117 WhatsApp clicks, 7 clicks on the website's phone number, 7 messages and 4 calls from the ad. Only 2 of the 8 accounts also tracked the form as a conversion, and neither received a request through it.

Two caveats. A WhatsApp click is not yet a message: some people open the chat and never write. And a badly built form is worse than none: we have seen older websites whose form said «message sent» even when sending failed.

The practical recommendation: WhatsApp visible on every page, the phone number next to it and a short form for those who prefer to write, all tracked and tested.

Why WhatsApp wins

  • 01

    Faster

One tap opens the chat. No fields to fill on a phone.

  • 02

    Photos from the start

The customer sends photos of the job and the quote is more accurate from the outset.

  • 03

    Same-day replies

The conversation sits on the phone of whoever replies, not in a forgotten inbox.

  • 04

    Easy to track

The button click can be tracked as a conversion in Google Ads and Analytics.

How to set it up

  • A fixed WhatsApp button, visible on mobile, on every page
  • A pre-filled message with the service and the page of origin
  • Number in international format (+351) and WhatsApp Business
  • Tested on an iPhone and an Android that are not yours
  • WhatsApp click tracked as a conversion
  • A short form as an alternative, with real confirmation of sending

From button to reply

  1. Build the button

A wa.me link with the right message, visible without scrolling on mobile.

  2. Track the click

Google Ads conversion and Analytics event, without delaying WhatsApp from opening.

  3. Test

iPhone, Android and a phone with an ad blocker switched on.

  4. Reply

Away message in WhatsApp Business and a reply the same working day.

Frequently asked questions

Is a contact form still worth having?

Yes, as an alternative, especially for longer requests or people who do not use WhatsApp. But test it: a form that shows «sent» without sending loses enquiries silently.

Is a WhatsApp click a quote request?

Not always. It is the best measure available, but some people open the chat and do not write. That is why clicks should be checked against the conversations that actually arrived.

And the phone?

In our sample, 7 requests were clicks on the website's phone number and 4 were calls from the ad, against 117 WhatsApp clicks. Source: High Level Marketing, 8 Google Ads accounts of small construction and home-service businesses in Portugal, 24 July–21 October 2026.

Do I need WhatsApp Business?

It is recommended: it separates the business number from your personal one, allows away and welcome messages, and a profile with opening hours and address. It is free.
